Whangarei’s First Innings Lead, Rodney Collapse Again

Cricket

A WHOLLY UNEXPECTED DOUBLE BATTING COLLAPSE ON THE A PART OF RODNEY HAS BEEN THE FEATURE OF THE DARGAVILLE SHIELD MATCH IN WHICH WHANGAREI ARE DEFENDING THE TROPHY.

A- chain of accidents kept the challengers subdued in the first innings. Two of their leading batsmen were run out. another three fell to l.b.vv.. two to the new interpretation of the rule, while a sixth was stumped by a ball which rebounded from the ‘keeper’s pads.

On top of this, the Whangarei attack was steady and of good length. In contrast, the early Whangarei batsmen got on top of the bowling, fortunately for their side, as the last five wickets added but 20 runs.

The opening day concluded with Whangarei still 15 runs ahead, and with Pat Dunning, one of the best aggressive batsmen for the visitors, out n second time.

The manner in which Vipond and Gubb made merry with the bowling in the first hour of play this morning betokened ill for Whangarei, but once they were separated wickets toppled in quick time, so that at luncheon Rodney was all out for 134, leaving Whangarei but 97 to get for an outright victory.

Whangarei cpen. Piloting the way for Whangarei. were Macklow, who in his only club knock locally, made 141, and Cole. Eight, including a four off the cut by Macklow, came in Law’s first over. Macklow was moving away nicely and also took a boundary off Game’s first delivery. Seventeen were on the board when Cole poked an easy catch to slips. When 16, Macklow skied a ball on the leg side, P. Dunning missing a difficult catch, although he had the ball in hand.

Hewlett, fresh after his 94 not out of the previous week, was confident to all except W. Dunning, the slow bowler having replaced Came. Vipond spelled Law and in his second over penetrated the defence of Macklow, 422 —22. Mainly with glances and placements to leg. Hewlett collected runs smartly. Hewlett Trapped.

Law, who takes a run of over 20 paces and has a most peculiar windmill action, trapped Hewlett with a slower ball, the batsman getting his leg in front—63 —3—21. The advent of Masters saw the scoring rate accellerate, 11 appearing off one over from W. Dunning. Vipond was brought back, vice Law and once more met with early success, bowling Masters with a faster ball. Meanwhile, Fyfe was settling down to play his best knock of the season, the sweeps to leg with which he sent the ball either along the ground or high over the heads of the fieldsmen being particularly effective. After the innings had been in progress for an hour and 40 minutes, he gave Whangarei the first innings lead.

Before the fieldsman had signalled, four were run off another Fyfe clout, and the Onerahi star also despatched the next ball to the chalkline—l2 off Game’s over. Hundred Up. P. Dunning relieved Vipond and Fyfe jumped into the new bowler to hoist the 100, which had taken 30 overs, against 45 overs for Rodney’s 85. Then, Whangarei’s tail sagged. Burch smacked P. Dunning for a two and completely missed the next, which was cvertossed. —103 —s—B.5—8. Collins cocked the following ball to Andrews, perched almost on the bat.

The possible hat-trick was spoilt by Wilson, with a four and a three in the over. However, the bowler had his revenge when the Whangarei skipper played back and saw his leg stump lean.

Law took up the attack again and claimed Cowan’s wicket, a snick off an intended drive enabling R. Dunning to gather the* catch. Three balls later Drake was skittled. The first six of the match was hit by Fyfe off P, Dunning, but Hilton went first ball, terminating the innings, which had lasted 2 ; } hours. Rodney In Again.

Before stumps Rodney embarked on the quest of securing as many runs as possible in the 20 minutes remaining. P. Dunning was particularly forceful, and was assisted in his object by some wild firing at the wicket, yielding n four and a two in overthrows. Things did not all go in Rodney’s favour, however, and P. Dunning was l.b.w. to Drake for 17. At stumps Vipond was five and Gubb one. making the total 23 for the loss of one wicket.

Play was very bright when Rodney resumed batting this morning. Both batsmen wasted no time in getting into their stride. Vipond moving away with hook shots for two apiece of! Hewlett. Hewlett bowled but one over before being supplanted by Drake. Vipond lofted the first ball luckily over the head of point, but followed with backward drives yielding a two and a single. With a sweep to leg, Gubb cracked the first boundary, overhauling the leeway and bringing 40 up. A wristy leg glance yielded him another boundary off Masters. Dropping them just short of a good length, Drake came in for punishment, Vipond pulling him, for two threes. Ten came off the over.

Masters Has Bad Luck. Bowling to a cordon of four fieldsmen between square log and the ’keeper, Masters had bad luck when Gubb spooned a ball right into Cowan’s hands, for the catch to bo dropped. In Drake’s next over Gubb offered r> very low catch to Burch, at first slip, again being lot off. After half an hour’s play, Gubb was 16 and Vipond 24, with the total at 59.

The pair continued on their merry way, picking up runs very freely. However, when Wilson came on for the first time during the innings, he obtained results quickly. getting Vipond l.b.w. with his fourth ball--77 9 34. Third L.B.W. Victim. Gubb and Hooper seemed quite untroubled, but Wilson, who was keeping a splendid length and disguising

bis pace cleverly, made Gubb the third l.b.w. victim of the innings

Hewlett came on at the other end to skittle Hooper. W. Dunning stepped into the Onerahi bowler to hit him for two fours in three balls, but lofted the next to Masters.—llo—s—ll. When Anderson was run out seven runs later Rodney’s hopes of a presentable score entirely vanished.

Masters th| claimed three quick wickets, two in one over, and Cole, near the boundary, took a good catch to dismiss Came. Law prolonged the innings by boisterous batting, but the whole side was out in under two hours. Details: — RODNEY. First Innings 85 Second Innings. N. Vipond. Ibw.. b Wilson 34 P. Dunning, Ibw., b J.
