WHIRLWIND DAMAGE AT MOKAI
ROTORUA. This Day. j Early on Wednesday afternoon, a 1 whirlwind at Mokai, 40 miles from | Rotorua, took a narrow track across i country, two mills, owned by the j Taupo Totara Timber Company, being ! unroofed and four workmen’s cottages I being almost completely destroyed. Tiie mill buildings were struck at about 1.15 p.m., accompanied by a. deafening roar, caused by the ! corrugated iron roofing being ripped off and being thrown for upj wards of 100 yards. At the same time, four small cot- , leges were struck by the whirlwind I and were immediately reduced to piles jcf splintered timber, broken windows U.nd scattered household effects. | Fortunately. there were few em- | pioyees about at the time, owing to the I mills having closed down for the holij days. Several men carrying out rei pairs to machinery, howevep, had a | narrow escape, having to take shelter | until the whirlwind had passed, j Damage is estimated at £IOOO, but it | is expected that the mills will be able to commence work on Monday,
