7500 Feet Of Neon To Illuminate Street

Designed to be the largest neon installation in the world. 7500 feet of the j gas tubing has been mounted as a clisj tmctive method of lighting the main ! street. Windward Avenue,Venice, California. which runs from the trolley depot to the amusement pier. Blue, green and red ai’e blended in parallel tubes, which follow the lines of the arcades on each side of the street. The reconstructed arcades of stucco are copied from the Italian Renaissance architecture of the city in Italy which gave its name to this resort area of the City of Los Angeles. After competitive bids, property owners and local business men who sponsored the installation as a civic project, selected the sketch of Edwin H. Lum, designer for the Twentieth Century Lites, Inc., which did the job. Mr Lum, who said an agreement had been made not to publish the cost, declared the local project’s closest rival in size was a Berlin installation of approximately 6200 feet, with no such curves as make the Windward Avenue project outstanding.

Completing replacing" conventional methods fo street lighting, the electric-ity-powered illumination in' rainbtfw colours opens a new field in community planning, just as the noon light opened new possibilities for advertising signs, according to Mr hum.
