WIFE'S RESCUE EFFORT FAILS

A warehouse employee, Mr Jack McConchie, aged about 28, of Te Aro Road, Wellington, who was staying at Hataitai, slipped off the rocks near the patent slips at Evans’ Bay and was drowned yesterday. Mr McConchie was accompanied by his wife and a young boy, ’Ronnie Weir, and while trying to regain the boy’s hat which had blown off, fell into the water, which Is very deep at that point. Mrs McConchie, who is a strong swimmer, dived in when she saw her husband was in difficulties, but the water was rough and she as unable to get to him in time. She was taken to hospital, suffering from shock. The body has not been recovered.
