Large Crowds Watch Waipu Sports And Dancing Yesterday

BEFORE SINCE ITS INCEPTION 07 YEARS AGO HAS THE WAIPU CALEDONIAN SOCIETY’S ANNUAL HIGHLAND GATHERING AND GAMES PROVED SUCH A SUCCESS AS WAS YESTERDAY’S FUNCTION.

Mr J. J. Finlayson, the first white man to be born in Waipu. was emphatic that yesterday’s crowd was the largest ho had seen, and he had been present at 66 of the 67 gatherings.

People from all parts of the North Island attended the function, either r,s visitors or as contestants. Tartans and kilts were, of course, the principal mode of attire, while the music of the pipes did not cease from early morning till late at night.

The Hon. P. Fraser, Minister of

Health, was present, and. in spirit with

the occasion, wore a tartan tie

Truly Highland Welcome

After being foi'mally introduced by the Rev. J. D. MacFarlane, Mr Fraser remarked that he had looked forward for a long time to being able to attend a Highland gathering at Waipu.

At the conclusion of the sports, a concert was held in the Walpu Hall, the following contributing to the entertainment: Mr Snicer (tenor). Miss Edna Peace. Miss Doreen Atkins. Mr A. Dollar (comedianj. Mr R. McKay (violinist). The concert was one mainly of Scotch items, in keeping with the occasion.

He did not think there was a more friendly and cordial gathering in the whole Dominion than that he had experienced since arriving at Waipu. He had been welcomed in true Highland fashion, which maintained the highest and best sentiments of Scottish people. Athletic events, dancing and pipeband playing were the principal items of the day. Entries for the dancing sections were particularly heavy and taxed the judge’s capacity to its fullest extent before decisions could be arrived at.
