Otaika
The first match of the season for the Otaika Tennis Club took place in ideal weather at the local court on Saturday, when the Otaika Valley team defeated the home team by nine sets to three. Owing to a late start, there was not sufficient time for any single sets to be played.
Picnic lunch and afternoon tea were enjoyed under the shady trees on the banks of the creek. The social committee —Mrs Cameron, Misses D. Kerr and G. Morgan—were in charge of the afternoon tea and effectively carried out their duties.
Details of the sets were as follows, (visitors names being mentioned first):
Ladies’ Doubles.—Mrs Paki and Miss E. Pitman beat Mrs Wilson and Mrs Holmes, 6—2; Mrs Wilson and Mrs E, Williams beat Miss G. Morgan and Miss B. Holmes., 6 —2; Mrs Flesher and Miss Jones beat Mrs Cameron and Miss D. Kerr, 6—3.
Men’s Doubles. —W. Flesher and N, Nathan beat N. Holmes and F. Poolman, 6 —l; W. Paki and K. Tito lost to A. Calvert and A. Marsh, 4 —6; H. Pitman and Panaho beat R. Smart and H. Cuff, 6—2.
Combines.—Mrs Paki and W. Flesher beat Mr and Mrs Holmes. 6—l; Miss E. Pitman and N. Nathan lost to Mrs Wilson and F. Poolman, 3—6; Miss E. Williams and W. Paki beat Miss G. Morgan and A. Calvert, 6—3; Mrs Nathan and T. Tito lost to Miss B. Holmes and A. Marsh. 3—6; Miss Jones and J. Panaho boat Miss D. Kerr and R. Smart, 6 —4; Mrs Flesher and H. Pitman beat Mrs Cameron and R. Kehoe, 6—o. Birthday Party. A happy little party was held at the home of his parents at Otaika Valley on Friday evening to celebrate the ! birthday of Master Brian Cox-Smith. Brian’s name was called over the air during the children’s hour, and great was his excitement when told to look on the clothes line for his present, a pair of “ducks” (long white cricketing trousers). Brian is the mascot of the Puwera Cricket Club, and attends practically all the matches played by the team, his father being vice-captain of the team. A feature of the birthday tea was a beautifully iced cake with seven candles around it. The little folk who were at the party were:—Pauline and Heather Edge, Brian, Joan and Anne Cox-Smith. Bcveidey and Dorothy Edge and Peter Gourlay. Personal. Mr and Mrs A. Burton and daughter, of Whangarei, spent the week-end as the guests of Mrs Burton’s aunt at Otaika Valley—Mrs Tavinor. Hall Dance. A very successful annual dance was held under the auspices of the Otaika Hall Society (Inc.) on Thursday evening. Cricket. During last week-end the Puwera cricket team journeyed to Three Mile Bush where they were defeated by the home team in a friendly match. This week-end the Puwera team play Tapuhi in a friendly match at Puwera.
