Christmas Feeling Already

“The Christmas feeling is about already,” Mr G. N. Morris, S.M., remarked at the sitting of the Whangarei Magistrate’s Court to-day. A large number of defended civil cases, some of which had been previously adjourned, were called for the purpose of fixing hearing dates.

Mr Morris intimated that he would be available for a succession of days just prior to Christmas, but there appeared to be a marked disinclination by the solicitors present in court to enter into arrangements for fighting cases at that season.

In instances where one legal man was prepared to accept a December date, the other involved in the same action almost invariably found himself engaged upon other matters. Neither was there any spontaniety about accepting fixtures in early January. “It’s like getting back to school,” someone was heard to remark, sotto voce. Finally, most of the defended cases were pencilled in for January 25, an ordinary court day, when fixtures for their hearing will be made.
