Otaika
An enjoyable programme was presented by the school children at a concert held on Thursday evening in the Otaika Hall. An item which created much amusement was a sketch, “Poor Little Angelina,” in which Violet Pitman was Angelina, and Alice Woodgate was the Prince, accompanied by a tapdancing chorus. • The following programme earned the approval of the large audience: Songs, Pauline Paki, “It’s a Sin to Tell a Lie” and-“ Uncle Ned”; recitation Des. Magee, “There’s a Baby in Our House”; .tap dance duo, Violet Pitman and Norma Litt; tap dance trios, June Macken, Mona Dwyer and Pauline Paki; Joy Steedman, Alice Woodgate, and Clare Vyle; chorus by the scholars. “My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean,” with Clare Vyle and Violet Pitman as soloists; recitations by Jack Magee, Sylvia Wilson and A. Tonner; song by Joan Magee, Norma Litt, Violet Pitman, Clare Vyle, Joy Steedman and Alice Woodgate, “The Willow-pattern Plate”; “Lullaby Land.” sung in costume by the scholars. Supper, prepared by the mothers, was handed round by the children. After supper, dancing for the adults was continued until past midnight, music being supplied by Mrs J. E. Lord. In a happy little speech, Norma Litt presented a handsome bouquet to Mr's Lord. Mrs Magee and Mrs Steedman were also presented with bouquets. While going about her duties on Thursday morning, Miss Edge, of Otaika Valley, slipped and suffered a compound fracture of the wrist. She was taken to Whangarei, where she received medical attention, after which she returned to her home.
There is a very fine display of sweetpeas at present in bloom in the. local school garden. The plants, which grow all along the front of the school, are some six feet in height, reaching as high as the windows, and area mass of flowers of all colours.
