ROWING CLUB’S SEASON OPENED
The weather was perfect and there was a good muster of spectators for the opening day of the Whangarei Howirfg Qlub on Saturday afternoon, Mr W. Maurer, vice-president, officiated, in the unavoidable absence of the president, and declared the season open. Due to the splendid organising work of the officials, particularly the club captain, Mr G. Auld, .’the events were all got off in quick time. During the afternoon the ladies served afternoon tea. J Results of the trial fours for the president’s trophy were 'as follows: First Race.—Gardiner (stroke), JHanna (3). S. Price (2), W. Brown beat Lovatt, H, W, Cormack, Redmond, J. Mason by one and a-half lengths. Gardiner’s crew had the advantage of greater experience, but had the outside running. It was anybody’s race until the straight home, where Gardiner forged ahead, to win by. a length and a half. Second Race.—C. Storey, McGregor, R, Hughes and Walker beat Bindon, G. Dent, J. Boyd and Hope. This was the best race of the day._ From the start, both crews rowed neck and neck, and' it was only a short distance from the post that Storey’s crew put in a spurt and beat the opposition by threequarters of a length. In the final, Gardiner’s crew beat Storey’s crew by a length and a half.
