LONDON, November 27. IMPERIAL ECONOMIC COMMITTEE REPORTS THAT THE AMOLWT OF TOBACCO SMOKED IN BRITAIN IS INCREASING AND THERE IS A MARKED TENDENCY FOR CIGARETTES TO DISPLACE PIPES.
The report also states that sales of Empire tobacco arc increasing and the quality of Empire tobacco has improved during the past few years.
In the past ten years, the consumption of Empire leaf has increased at a rate of 2,000,0001bs per annum, and it is now over 33 per cent of the total.
Improvement in type, in production, and in marketing, especially with leaf coming from Canada, India and Southern Rhodesia, have resulted in much of that leaf now being suitable for the cigarette trade of the United Kingdom.
In 1935, this country, which is the world’s largest importer of tobacco leaf, took 5.4 per cent of the exports from the United States, and 66 per cent of the total exports of leaf from Empire countries.
