Aocprding to the interim figures published in the* Gazette, there were 31,210,734 ' sheep in the Dominion on April 30, an increase of 1,097,030 on the final figures for the previous year, and a record in the history of the pastoral industry in New Zealand. The North Island total was 17,015,013, an increase of 643,169, and the South Island 14,195,721, which is 453,861 more than the figure for 1936. The export of mutton and lamb for the year ended April 30, with the 1935 figures in parentheses, was as follows: —Mutton carcases, 1,692,610 (1,850,166); lamb carcases, 8,770,630 (8,234,060.)
