Waiharara School Banquet And Ball
The first annual school banquet and ball, which was held in the Waiharara hall last Friday, June 18, was a pronounced success. At 6 p.m. the school children assembled at a gaily bedecked hall to enjoy a banquet tea, at which the following toasts were honoured:— The. King; “The School Committee, proposed by Ivan Stanisich and acknowledged by Mr E. Wattridge, chairman of the school committee; “The Staff,” proposed by Ljubo Yelavich, and acknowledged by the head teacher Mr T. J. Haughton; “The Ladies,’ proposed by Walter Yelavich, and acknowledged by Mrs Haughton; The Prize Winners,” proposed by Zorxka Hrstich, and acknowledged by Philip Steed, ",, * 1 t At the conclusion of the banquet, the tables were cleared, and the pupils :of the school executed a number ot folk and country dances in a pleasing | and rhythmical manner. These dances included Grand March, Running Dance, Nigger’s Barn Dance, Hunsdon, House, Polonaise.' 1 • Following this, the sports awards and prizes for 1936 were presented by the chairman of the committee. Tne following pupils secured major awards. Swimming, championships: Senior girls, .Mary Salle; senior boys, John Cook; junior girls, Joyce Whitmm, junior boys, no award. _ ~U Athletic, championships; Senior gins, Ada Morning; senior boys, Ivan Stanisich; intermediate girls, Letty Morning' intermediate boys, Joseph Babich; junipr girls, Rosy. Salle;, junior boys, Bryne Shine. _ House championships; Boys, Philip Steed; girls, Ada Morning. 1 Dux and Proficiency: Ramsay Steed. A successful dance followed the children’s programme. Visitors were present from Kaitaia, Awanui, .-Waihopo and Houhora. The Monte Carlo 7 was won by Mr, A. Srhoj and partner and the Spot waltz by Mr and. Mrs Johnson.
