Yugoslavia—Latest Land Of Horror
; (Received 10 a.m.) • LONDON, June 11. f np'HE’latest land of terror is Yugoslavia, according to the “Daily Her- ! aid,” which claims that the prisons of that country are full of | women and men whose only offences have been to criticise the Gov- | eminent or the police.
! Even children who visited the houses of suspects have been sent j to gaol for days and weeks, while their parents were questioned. ! The “Herald” alleges that confessions have been extorted from J prisoners by a number of tortures, including flogging, mutilation, apply- ; ing eggs taken from boiling water to their armpits and forcing needles S under their fingernails. I | Men and women have been tieated in such a way that they are | doomed, to suffer frightful diseases all their lives, if ever they leave ! prison, says the paper. I A careless word, or an attempt to resist the brutality of the police, | are adequate reasons for arrest and torture.
