EASTER ATTRACTIONS FOR WHANGAREII AND DISTRICT

The advent of another Easter revives activities, which, for many years, have been associated with this period of the year. As far as Whangarei is concerned, there is always a large efflux and influx of people. Local and outside attractions lure the crowds, and, with many, habit has develped to the extent that it is simply a matter of going here or there according to taste. The Whangarei district is well catered for in the way of bright sporting events. Undoubtedly the principal attraction will be the Maungatapere jubilee sports on Easter Monday. This year’s carnival has every indication of j being a record. Wonderful entries • have been received in the various | competitions and only fine weather is | needed to ensure a gala occasion for i this very live orggnisatipn. On Saturday, the annual Donnelly’s I Crossing Sports take place ■ and many competitors will have, an outing here before tackling the big money at Maungatapere. Representative Cricket. J , In Whangarei itself, the North Auck-land-Auckland junior representative cricket match on Saturday and Monday will create considerable interest. The metropolitan side, which defeated | Wellington for the Brabin Shield at 1 Christmas time, is composed of players all under the age of 21. The majority of them play in Auckland senior cricket. They arrive in Whangarei at 3 o’clock tomorrow and return on Monday evening. ; Bowlers will be having their interest in the Hikurangi Club’s annual full- . rinks tourney, which extends over Friday, Saturday and Monday. A team ' from the Whangarei Club,, comprising S. Williams, S. Gribble, G. Wilding, md M. Whitelaw is to participate in he Auckland Easter tournament. . Church Camps. The. usual Methodist girls’ camps, at Port Albert, Brpadwppd and Kaikohe, open tonight and break up on Tuesday. These are attended by young ladies from all oyer Northland. A number of Northland Methodist boys are going into one of the Auckland camps, situated on the fringe of the Manukau harbour. The annual Northland camp is not being held this year on account of the inability to get a suitable site.

Members of the local St. Francis Boy Scout group will be taking part in the combined camp at Auckland. Aquatic devotees will be out on their Easter cruises, which form such an ideal wind-up to the season. , Boats heading for Kawau are . the Revel, Muru, Jeunesse, Whati, Kopuru • and Aloha, while the Sea • Diel . intends visting the Great Barrier. . The Arethusa, which, in the course of a cruise has been to the Barrier and all round the Hauraki Gulf,, will .be back after 'Easter. As usual many small boats and also launches will spenc the few days on the harbour.
