Conservatives Win Two By-Elections

The Tonbridge by-election, owing to Mr H, H. Spencer Clay’s death, resulted:—
Sir Adrian Baillie (Con.) :.. . 28,802 Mr Harold Smith (Labour) ... 8,147 Mr R. B. Mathews (Liberal) .. 6,073 Mr Spencer Clay’s majority at last election was 1455. The Farnham by-election, owing to Sir A. M. Samuel’s peerage, resulted: Mr Godfrey Nicholson (Con.) . 20,580 Mr Peter Payne (Labour) 7,792 Mr Linton Thorpe (Ind. Con.) . 2,327 Mr Edward Miller (Ind.) 154 The two Independents forfeited their deposits. Mr A. M. Samuel’s majority at'the last election was 20,486.
