Cup Presented By Lord Bledisloe Destroyed In Fire
iSpecial to "Northern Advocate.’l GISBORNE. This Day.
Eire yesterday morning destroyed the Farmers’ Trading Company store at Waiapu, and, with it, the valuable Ahuwhenua Cup, a silyer trophy, presented by Lord Bledisloe to encourage competition among Maori farmers, An effort was made to save the, cup, which had been entrusted to the company for safe keeping. When Mr G. Pepere was aroused by the fire, he and Constable Strawbridge found it impossible to enter the building. The cup was won in the 1936 competition by Mr Henry Dewes, a member of the Ngatiporou tribe.
