Important Find Of Old Maori Tools
Special to "Northern Advocntc'’! WAIHI, This Day. Old Maori tools and instruments, consisting mostly of simple stone fishhooks, stone adzes, drill points and scrapers have been four.d in the sandhills at Waihi Beach by Mr S. M. Hovell. of Waihi.
There are plenty of unfinished fishhooks in every stage of manufacture, clearly showing the method of cutting, rasping and drilling from the raw material to the finished article. One of the most important discoveries is a large mother-of-pearl fishhook shank. As mother-of-pearl is net found round the New Zealand shores, it is thought that the article was made from parts of a supply brought from the islands during the migration.
