Firm Fat Cattle Market At Stortford Lodge

Short yardings accounted for a firm market for, fat cattle at Stortford Lodge yesterday, female sorts showing a rise of up to 25/ a head. Prime ox beef was in very short supply, making 30/ per lOOlbs. Exceptional heifers of outstanding quality ranged to £lO 15/; best heavy prime cows, to £9 10/; Jersey sorts, 15/ to 20/ per lOOlbs, according to age. The dry weather has affected the selling of store cattle, the market being down 10/ a head. Very forwardgrown young bullocks made £9, and best 19-months steers, well-grown, £6 18/6. A big percentage of the offering was passed.
A bright market prevailed for store sheep, sales being made at firm rates. Very forward wethers made 25/3, and fat and forward black-faced lambs, 22/. Carry over backward lambs were much more difficult to trade, cull lines not being wanted. Fat sheep improved on late rates, prime heavy wethers 4* making 30/, and prime maiden ewes 25/6. Light aged ewes sold above the freezing schedule. Extra heavy prime shorn down lambs topped the market at 34/3, and lighter prime made 27/6.
