PILOT DROWNED WHEN PLANE DIVES INTO SEA

(Received 10 a.m.) MELBOURNE, March 22. Pilot-Officer E. J. Eagerty, of the Royal Australian Air Force, was drowned late this afternoon when a Bristol Bulldog machine divel? into Port Phillip Bay, three miles off the Air Force depot at Point Cooke. The pilot was flying solo and was engaged in shooting practice at an aerial target towed by a Wapiti aeroplane. Mr Eagerty dived at the target, but the Bulldog failed to recover and struck the sea and sank immediately. The Wapiti’s pilot saw the crash"'and returned to ( the scene, but there was no sign of Mr Eagerty. The occupants of a reconnoitring aeroplane later saw the Bullcfbg on the sea-bed in 30 feet of water. The harbour trust sent a hopper barge and a salvage aeroplane to the scene. Mr Eagerty joined the Air Force in July, 1934. He completed his training as pilot officer in July, 1935.
