Through unwittingly breaking the local authorities regulations in his efforr to assist the Dargaville Borough Council,, the deputy-mayor, Mr J. A. McLean, has been compelled to resign his seat on the council until the next general election in May, 1938. His resignation is the result of a report from the Audit Department, which was considered at a special ! meeting of the council last evening. 1 “I am pressed to state that in this ( case no mala fide dealings with the council are suggested, and, on the evidence submitted, the audit office is satisfied that you acted in good faith throughout your dealings with the council, and in ignorance of the fact that you were contravening the provisions of the Local Authorities Members Contract Act, 1934,” stated a letter j from the audit office. j Appreciation of the services render- | ed by Mr McLean was made by the acting chairman, Mr B.
