QUIET WORK OUTS AT ELLERSLIE

Sporting

[Special to “Northern Advocate."] AUCKLAND, This Day. Several candidates for the Auckland autumn meeting, which opens at Ellerslie on Saturday, arrived last night and this morning. They include Martara, The. Crooner, Cerne Abbas, Erination, Legatee, Okawa, Scotland, and Bass. Several were doing useful work this morning on the No. 3 grass and tan tracks, but as final gallops take place tomorrow, nothing of a strenuous nature was required of them. Scotland worked over a couple of rounds on the tan track, but he was not going better than half-pace. He looks a very fit horse, but so far no rider has been engaged for him. It has not been decided yet as to which race he will contest —the Easter or the President’s Handicap. Legatee, who is an acceptor for the President’s Handicap, was ; given a similar task.- He looks in great, fettle, ■ and is carrying more solid condition than when he was here at Christmas, when he scored a surprise win in the Goodwood Handicap, one mile.’. Laughing Lass, who arrived yesterday, worked on the No. 3 grass track, averaging about 15sec to the; furlong j for the last six. This filly bears a bright appearance and promises to run well in the Great. Northern Oaks. F. Davis’ trio, Francis Drake, Haut Monde and Mandamus' were not required to do anything in the way of fast work, but they all Idok . exceptionally well, and should run, prominently at the meeting. Francis Drake has thickened out a little since he was here last and will be one of the prime fancies in the Great Northern Champagne Stakes, in which W. J. Broughton will ride him. . r Okawa, who arrived yesterday from Tauranga, where she was a winner last Monday, is not engaged at the Auckland meeting, but is to. remain here, and will later be taken North for the Whangarei meeting next month. Forest Glow (W. J. McDowell) was schooled over the steeplechase fences on the flat, and acquitted himself in a. satisfactory manner. He cantered round and cleared the same fences again, giving a good exhibition. He is engaged in tthe Autumn Steeplechase on Monday, a race in which he ran second last year.
