Muru Wins Yacht Race Round Sail Rock

The Whangarei.Cruising Club staged its annual oceajn race aroundi Sail Rock for the Parkes Shield on Saturday afternoon. •The race started off Kioreroa at 2.30 p.m. Margaret and Muru crossed the line first, followed by Revel, Naumai and Charm. Muru and Revel immediately went out in front, but, off Limestone Island, Charm displaced Muru. The order down the harbour was Revel, Charm, Naumai, Muru and Margaret.

A steady N.N.E. breeze gave a close haul to the Heads. Here Muru passed Charm, and Naumai went into second place. Spinnakers were set for the run to Sail Rock, Muru and Charm making a great race over this leg of the course, with the former holding a slight advantage. The Revel rounded the rock - just before dark, and the Muru, Charm and Naumai about 20 minutes later. The breeze dropped here, and difficulty was experienced in rounding this mark, particularly by the Charm and Naumai. The breeze veered round to the N.W., giving the boats a beat back to the Heads.

The following are the finishing times and plaeings:—Revel, 11.30 p.m. Saturday (3m.); Muru, 1.1 a.m. Sunday (140 m.); Charm, 3.35 a.m. (150 m,); Naumai, 9.20 a.m. (30m.); Margaret, 10.25 a.m, (180 m.).

Corrected times placed Muru first, Revel second and Charm third.
