CENTRAL PARK ROTUNDA

ARCHITECTS DESIGN TO BE

OBTAINED

The Whangarei Borough Council de-. cided last night to obtain a design from' an architect for a band rotunda to be erected in Central Park.

As instructed by the council the engineer reported:—“The design of the fcSnd rotunda as submitted* by Mr Worley some years ago is simple and effective. It provides for a concrete structure octagonal in shape, four feet above ground level, with the floor carried upon reinforced concrete beams. The estimated cost of the structure is £145,' but if desired the cost can be reduced by filling the space enclosed by the walls with hard filling and covering with a 2-inch thick concrete slab. The estimated cost of this scheme is £125.

“I have also been asked to report upon the construction of a complete rotunda, and I am of opinion that, if it is the council’s intention to build a complete rotunda arid not the base only, as the present plan provides for, it is most important that the finished plan be now prepared. A band rotunda in Central Park should be a structure in keeping with the park, and should be designed for beauty as well as utility. As such, l‘submit that the design for the bandstand should be done by an architect. The construction work could be undertaken piece-meal —the base this year, and the roof at some future date.”

The. Mayor, Mr W. Jones, said he thought the engineer was right in his opinion that an architect should design the rotunda.

Cr Donaldson: I see no chance of having it built this financial year. The Mayor moved that an architect’s design be obtained, and this was carried.
