BRITISH TRUCKS
MANUFACTURER’S ENTERPRISE
British motor car manufacturers have in the past been accused of neglecting * their overseas markets ‘and allowing foreign competition unrestricted scope. To-day. however, they are fully alive to the potentialities of the Dominions as a source of good business, and last year New Zealand was the leading Dominion of the British Empire in British motor vehicle importations. The British manufacturers are definitely out to hold this lead for New Zealand and one outstanding instance of their determination is that provided by Vauxhall Motors Ltd., of England. This firm has sent out a complete range of their Bedford trucks from the 8 cwt. light delivery up to the 4 ton model. All these vehicles are fitted with useful and attractive bodies built in New Zealand. This fleet of trucks which appeared in Whangarei for demonstration purposes on Saturday and to-day, presented an imposing spectacle lined up in front of Paine Bros.’ attractive motor showrooms in Cameron Street. They have been j taken right through New Zealand, | staying at the various towns long enough to demonstrate to public bodies and all transport users that Britain is certainly building trucks that for price, durability and modern appearance can compete with any-1 thing produced in other countreis. As 1 with all Bedford trucks in New Zea- j land, this fleet was assembled in j Wellington , and the bodies were built i by New Zealand labour. The drivers j are. of course. New Zealanders also, so that the enterprise of Britain is | directly responsible for additional employment and prosperity in New Zealand. The fleet is extending its itinerary for demonstration purposes as far north as Kaitaia. visiting Kaikohe on Tuesday and Wednesday, Kaitaia on Thursday, Rawene on Friday and Dargaville on Saturday, returning to Auckland via Helensville during the week-end. The display of these Bedford trucks in front of Paine Eros.’ showrooms today was the centre of much interest and demonstrations were frequently given. Early in the day the new Bedford 3-4 ton bus recently put into commission by the Northern Bus Coy. headed the line of models and with its imposing lines and made conspicuous by the company's bright red colour scheme. lent added interest to the display. This bus is another allBritish product added to its fleet and the fact that the Bus Company lias faith in the strength and power of Bedford for its heavy services, augurs well for others to follow the lead given by this company. 707
