monthly meeting RUSSELL FUND. County councils throughout Northland are showing appreciation of the services of the late Mr R. B. Russell, formerly manager of the Hokianga' County Council. The Bay county decided to donate £lO towards a fund inaugurated with the ultimate object of presenting Mrs Russell with a cheque. Paihia Roads. A sum of £25 is to be spent on repairs to the Piahia foreshore road; £2O will be spent on Hairini Road. W. R. Tracey, of Paihia, was granted permission to place and maintain a garden seat on the seafront at the bottom of Selwyn. Avenue, Paihia. Private Phone Line. R. Harris and S. W. Jolly' ‘were given permission to erect a private telephone line at Waipapa. Dedication cf Roads.

The council has attached its seal to the acceptance of dedication for the following new roads in Kerikeri: (1) From Wellington Road to Bates’ property; (2) the road past Shanghai Jones’ property; (3) a by-road leading from Wellington Road; (4) a road to Riverview Estate. Pot Handled Roads.

Following a communication from the Minister of Lands regarding the pot handled roads which were being made on sub-divisions at Kerikeri, the council tabled the following resolution: “Thb owners of all sections in Kerikeri having pot-handled access be advised that the council disclaims any liability for any future of this access, which does not form a legal road.” The Minister stated in his letter: “It would appear at present that there is no legislative power to prohibit these sub-divisions, if the principal use of trie lots is for farming purposes, such as small fruit or citrus growing. If, however, the use is residential, the schemes would have to be submitted to me for approval, and the lay-out could then be properly controlled.” He added that he is having the position fully investigated, and will consider the matter when these are complete. Hospital Levies. The Bay of Islands Hospital Board advised the council of the amount to be provided for the 1936-37 hospital levy by local bodies. The figures are: Bay of Islands County Council: Maintenance, £2,210; capital, £206 10/3. Kaikohe Town Board; Maintenance. £166 13/4; capital £2l 12/1. The rateable capital value of the two areas is: Kaikohe Town District, £158,490; Bay County, £2,101,560. . Station Access. Cr Smith and the engineer were instructed to investigate the Moerewa railway station access; approach the railway department, and report back to the council. “Considering the Government is considering elimination of level crossings,” Cr Smith said, “it would be a good idea to get rid of this one, too.” Main North Highway. The council has passed the following resolution with regard to the deputations from the Kaikohe Town Board to the Hon. R. Semple and the Hon. D. G. Sullivan concerning the location of the main national north highway. “The clerk is requested to obtain figures verifying the statements of the Kaikohe Town Board and Chamber of Commerce to the Ministers of Public Works and Railways that the main highway should be via Kaikohe.” ' - This resolution was tabled; with no discussion, but the matter will be gone into fully when the desired information is presented to the council. Main Road. Cr McKenzie drew attention to the rough condition of the KaikoheOhaeawai main road. The council decided to call tenders for metalling and screening.
