FARMERS OPPOSE INCREASED TARIFF PROTECTION
WELLINGTON, This Day.
Expressing opposition to any increase in tariff protection, the Farmers’ Union conference yesterday favoured the principle that any assistance deemed necessary for secondary industry should be given by. means of a direct subsidy, granted only in return for the undertaking not to raise the prices of the goods produced. It was considered that any embargo placed on importations must inevitably have a restrictive and damaging effect on the export market. The urgent need for the consolidation of country schools was emphasised by the conference. It was decided to press for a full survey of country education, with that policy in view. The conference reaffirmed the principle of freehold tenure and decided to ask the Government to abolish the land tax.
It also decided, while opposing the re-introduction of the graduated land tax, that, if re-introduced, the scale should apply equally to rural and urban lands.
