BISHOP BROUGHTON CENTENARY
(Received 10 a.m.) SYDNEY, May 29. The official opening service of the Bishop Broughton centenary celebrations was held in St. Andrew’s Cathedral last evening in the presence of one of the largest congregations in the history of the church in Australia. A brilliant touch was the procession of archbishops and bishops and others occupying high office in the Anglican Church, who are visiting Sydney from all parts of Australia and from other parts of the Empire. The lesson was read by the Primate of New Zealand, Dr. A. W. Averill. Dr. D’Arcy-Irvine, Coadjutor Bishop of Sydney, in the course of his sermon, said the church did well to honour the memory of Bishop Broughton. His was a noble example of untiring work, and, amid great difficulties, he had shown the highest qualities of a true Christian hero.
