YACHTS STRIKE SOUTHERLY GALE A very fresh southerly breeze made conditions unpleasant for competitors in the Whangarei Cruising Club’s race to Parua Bay on Saturday. Most boats were double-reefed. Three capsized and all others suffered minor mishaps. ' The race was conducted for 16ft and under class and over 16ft in conjunction, the following competing:—E. Ryan’s Wakanui (scr); E. Carmichael’s Revel dm), Baker and Keene’s Muru (14m), Purves and Richards’ Sunbeam (scr), A. Tebbutt’s Margaret (—), D. Wright’s Ocean Waif (7m) and A. Wright’s Whizz Bang (Bim). The boats crossed the line at Kioreroa. Muru being followed by nui, Revel, Whizz Bang, Sunbeam, Margaret and Ocean Waif. Shortly after the start Whizz Bang capsized, and was picked up by Mr P. H. Basley’s la’mch Dawn. Mr H. Preebe’s boat was called to the rescue when the Sunbeam went over, and the Ocean Waif, the third to,experience a soaking, was helped by Mr M. King in his launch Valerie.

The Wakanui assumed the lead from Revel, Muru and Margaret, the finish for the handicap event being in that order.

The Hard-Up Cup was annexed by Muru, the only boat in the class to complete the whole course. Margaret missed out a beacon, and suffered a mishap, her tiller being carried away, However, it was replaced and she continued. Muru also damaged her shrouds in a squall. j No times were recorded, as the launch appointed for this duty was a helper in the rescues. / Next week the annual ocean race to Sail Rock will take place, the Parkes’ Shield again being at stake. It is the fourth annual event and a good field is anticipated.
