WHAKAPARA

INSTITUTION OF HOME MISSIONARY.

On Friday evening last, in the Soldiers’ Memorial Hall, a large gathering of parishioners representing nearly every part of the district, met under the presidency of the Rev. C. Brierly, Moderator of the station, to institute Mr W. A. Porter, the new Home missionary who has succeeeded Mr H. M. McCallum, who had been missionary in charge for five years. The institution service began with a hymn, Scripture reading and prayer. This was followed by the institutional address, delivered by the Moderator. The second part of the evening’s programme was in the form of a public welcome to Mr and Mrs Porter. Addresses were delivered by the Moderator, who .also spoke on behalf of Mr Campbell, an elder, who was unavoidably absent. Mr McLennan, on behalf of the board of managers; Mrs McPhee, of Marua, on behalf of. the country representatives; .Mr O’Donoghue, a very old Whangarei friend of Mr Porter’s, also spoke. Mesdames Rarity and Crozier, of Hikurangi, rendered duets during the evening.

The Rev. Mr Brierly mentioned that a gig had been loaned for the work, and a set of harness on loan would be very acceptable.

The ladies provided a very appetising supper.
