LARGE YARDINGS AT WESTFIELD

Commercial

BUT VALUES WERE MAINTAINED

[Special to "Northern Advocate"!

AUCKLAND, This Day.

~ About 900 head of cattle came forward, an exceptionally large yarding, in view of transport difficulties, at the Westfield fat stock sale yesterday. Anticipating a shortage, with a conse-

quant improvement in price levels, local graziers sent in a large number of cows and heifers, a large proportion of which were of dairy breed. Although bidding lacked keenness, rates for these were unchanged. The yarding of sheep was on the small side, but included a number of quality lines. Competition throughout was free, and last week’s prices were readily obtained. There was again a very bright tone, and prices were inclined to improve in the pig section. Prices per lb for baconers were quoted unchanged at 43d for baconers, and from s£d to 53d for porkers. Stores were not plentiful, and these sold well, especially weaners.

The N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., reports that

beef was yarded in larger numbers. There was a ready demand, with values firm at late quotations. Exti’a choice ox sold at 32/ per 100 lb; choice and prime, 28/ to 31/; secondary and plain, 24/ to 27/; prime young cow and heifer beef, 27/ to 31/; secondary, 20/ to 26/. No extra heavy prime steers were penned. Heavy, £l2 to £l2 15,'; lighter, £lO 15/ to £ll 17/6; light, £9 to £lO 12/6; small and unfinished, £6 10/ to £8 15/; extra heavy prime young cows and heifers, £7 to £7 17/6; heavy, £6 to £6 15/; lighter, £4 15/ to £5 17/6; light, £3 10/ to £4 10/; others,, £1 10/ to £3 5/.

Sheep.—Sheep were penned in well up to average numbers, and sold under steady competition at values fully on a par with last week’s quotations. Extra heavy prime wethers, 26/ to

27/; heavy prime, 24/6 to 25/9; medium prime, 23/ to 24/3; light and unfinished, 21/ to 22/6; heavy prime ewes, 17/ to 17/9; lighter prime, 15/ to 16/6; other ewes, 12/ to 14/6. Lambs. —Our yarding of lambs was fully an average one, and sold under good competition at fully late rates. Heavy prime lambs, 23/ to 24/6; medium prime, 22/ to 22/9; light prime, 20/6 to 21/6; small and plain, 18/ to 20/.

Calves.—Calves were penned in shorter numbers than last week. The demand for runners was not so keen, and values for this class eased. Vealers sold readily at values on a par with last week’s rates. Runners, £2 10/ to £4 7/; heavy vealers, £3 13/ to £3 18/; medium, £3 to £3 7/; light, £2 8/ to £2 16/; smaller, £1

12/ to £2 2/; rough calves, 15/ to £1 8/; bobby calves, 5/ to 10/. Pigs.—Pigs were yarded in shorter numbers. Baconers and he6vy porkers sold freely at late rates, but mednum and light porkers were a shade easier. Heavy baconers, £2 12/ to £2 18/; medium, £2 8/ to £2 11/; light, £2 4/ to £2 6/; heavy porkers* £2 1/ to £2 4/; medium, £1 15/ to £1 19/; light, £1 12/ to £1 14/; small and unfinished, £1 5/ to £1 10/.
