The business people of Kaitaia expressed their respect for the young man, Walter Botterill, who lost his life in the flood, and sympathy with the- parents, by subscribing for a wreath.
Among the visitors on the tourist cruise on the liner Otranto appears the name of the Earl of Selbourne, a distinguished statesman and colonial 'governor, who has held several important posts in the British Government. He is making his first visit to New Zealand.
Mr H. D. Bannerman has been appointed headmaster of the Hukerenui South school. Other appointments are Mr H. G. Atkinson, sole teacher at Whangae. Miss B. Foster, assistant mistress at the Okaihau Public Works School, Miss E. J. Skegg, Peria. and Miss W. E. Utting, Ruakaka.
