Exhibition Tennis,
Tuesday, February 11,' is the date for the exhibition of tennis, which will be given by Henri Cochet and the three best known Australian professionals Willard, Gumming and Cameron.
Ambulance Inspection Postponed. Colonel Sleeman, head of the St, John Ambulance Brigade overseas, who was to have visited Whangarei for an inspection of the local brigade on Sunday, has been taken ill, and is in hospital. As a result the local function has been postponed until Sunday, February 23.
A Spinning Wheel. While a touring car, driven by Mr Blundell, was being driven down the main street, Kaikche, at mid-day today, one of the rear wheels shot off. The wheel careered down the main street, scattering a number of people, including a party of lady schoolteachers,- and finally crashed through a plate-glass window in the shop of Mr P. Leigh, tailor.
Body Recovered. The body of Leonard Sydney Lawrence, aged 19, who lost his life in a boating accident on the Northern Wairoa River, Dargaville, on Wednesday last, was recovered from the river bank, at the foot of Harding’s Landing, Aoroa, yesterday afternoon. At an inquest, after hearing medical evidence, the coroner returned a verdict of accidental drowning.
Arson sentences.
In the Supreme Court, Mr Justice Blair sentenced Edwin Blomfield McGill, a relief worker, aged 36, and Edwin Walter Barringer, an electrician, aged 40, to five years’ hard labour each on a charge of arson. The judge said the offence of arson was looked upon in tlfe criminal code as one of the greatest offences. The first case was in respect to a house* in College Street, Palmerston North, and the second in connection with the Makotuku Hotel, Hawke’s Bay. Both had pleaded guilty in the lower court.
Towai Show Entries. Information to hand is to the effect that entries for the Towai Show are coming forward well. It is anticipated that by the closing date, tomorrow night at 8 o’clock, the figures will exceed those of the previous year. The show is set down to be held on Thursday, February 13, cn the Association’s Grounds at Towai. Those who are desirous of attending are reminded that refreshments and hot water are available in a plentiful supply. 901

Ex-Councillor’s Sympathy. The Mayor of Whangarei has received the following telegram from Miss Alice Greville, of Ellerslie. who recently resigned her seat on the Whangarei Borough Council: “Sincerest sympathy with all sufferers from storm.”
