GETTING THEIR MEN
NORTHERN WITNESSES FOR SUPREME COURT
Northern floods and the Auckland Supreme Court circuit appear to run in the same cycle. The incident of the defendants in a case for trial before judge and jury being left on the Whangarei Town Wharf, necessitating postponement of the trial, is still fresh in the public memory.
Now, again, with the opening this week of the first session since that misadventure, witnesses from the North were faced with the prospect of being cut olf from Auckland. On Monday one girl rode miles ove r the slips and the remnant of the road from Whangaruru to where cars were waiting near Waimamakau.
Another batch of witnesses, who were required to give testimony in an alleged case of sheep stealing from Houhora, were marooned at Kaitaia for a few hours, while others, appearing in an action from Rawene, were left in the flooded Hokianga. A special car was hired from Kaitaia and ran through to Kaikohe, where the witnesses from the Far North were loaded into another special conveyance, which had conveyed the party from Rawene. The Rawene car then proceeded on to Whangarei and thence to Auckland; which was reached in good time. Good organisation on the part of the police!
