DEATH IN RANGES

PALMERSTON NORTH, This Day.
Death from exposure and exhaustion befel Mr Ralph Wood, married, an optician, of Manapouri Crescent, Palmerston North, one of a party of six young men who /Were caught by the storm in the Taifarua Ranges behind Levin on Sunday. The party was on a week-end excursion to the Te Matawai Hut, but, after reaching their objective, the storm broke. Attempting the return journey they had a terrifying experience on Butcher’s Saddle.
Uprooted trees were falling all around them and the track was completely obliterated. When open country was reached at Twin Peak, Wood and Albert Waters were seen to be failing and Wood died at 6 o’clock. The night was spent in the sleeping bags in the open, and next morning one of the party, Tom Arlidge, walked eleven miles to Levin for help.
