TWO LAUNCHES ON ROCKS
Boat-owners at Onerahi had an exciting time at the height of the noreaster. The gale was felt on the waterfront and a heavy sea was running. All owners took safety measures, and on Saturday afternoon, shifted their boats round off Kaiwaka Point where conditions were not so rough. The shelter was not sufficient, however, and a couple of craft became adrift and piled up. Mr I. Covacich, of Whangarei, was holidaying at Onerahi, and had his launch round in Munro Bay. On Sunday morning he found her to be missing, and got in touch with Mr W. Cossill at Whangarei, who immediately set out in his launch Marlene.
A brief search located the Imp on the rocks at Onemama, she having been swept across on the top side of Limestone Island. Luckily she was not pounded enough to be severely damaged, and at full-tide, was towed to Whangarei.
No leak had developed, but "the spray from the waves had half-filled her.
The Imp had parted with her anchor which has been lost. *
The “pick” used by the Kotere did
not get a solid enough hold and dragged. This boat, which won the Harl hour Board Cup at a regatta about six years ago, was not so fortunate, piling up on the rocks near the flashlight. Yesterday men were endeavouring to hold her off, but their task appeared hopeless. Mr Jack Mason’s launch Sceptre was lucky. Her anchor lost its hold and soon she was drifting. Then the “pick” caught and in her new anchorage, the Sceptre rode out the storm for the remainder of the night.
