JAP. TROOPS ON THE MARCH
MORE CHINESE AREAS OCCUPIED V another crisis looms up (Received 1 p.m.) LONDON, January 8. Manchukuo troops have occupied six border districts in Chahar, says “The Times” Peking correspondent. Cessation of these areas was demanded by Japan- in a Note to the Chinese Government in November. The troops are now pressing towards Sui-Yuan, which the Chinese expect to be the next field of Japanese expansion, in view of the strategical importance of the -province and its railway link with outer Mongolia, Flag Incident. The situation ini North China is again critical, as the result of Japanese demands presented to Sung ChehYuan, chairman of the Hopei-Chahar Council, for the arrest of 50 Chinese soldiers, who allegedly ransacked a Japanese store and hauled down the Japanese flag at Taku. Japan demands the dismissal of the commander of the Chinese troops and other officials at Taku, the payment of compensation, the cessation of antiJapanese activities and a guarantee that there will be no recurrence of them. Chinese circles fear that further demands will follow a shooting affray near one of the gates at Peking.
