MAN OF THE PEOPLE

> MR. SAVAGE IN OFFICE

CAPABLE AND SELFSACRIFICING

NEW ZEALAND’S DESTINY

[Special to “Northern Advocate.”]

. AUCKLAND, This Day. npHE announcement of Cabinet is A very pleasing generally to Auckland. The fact that Mr Savage has taken over various portfolios, and that he has experienced men in the team, has done much to encourage confidence. Mr Savage, it is thought, will endeavour to carry out what the party promised on the platform at election time. He has the whole-hearted support and confidence of the people. This is quite apparent by the tremendous majority Labour had at the poll.

The reception given to the Prime Minister since his election has been really remarkable. He has • become the man of the hour, and even people who had opposite ; political views were there to cheer him when he arrived in Wellingv ton.

Whenever he walks up the gravel path through the gardens to Parliament House, all eyes are on him. It is something to be sai'd for Mr Savage that he is not a nervous wreck by this time. Everyone chases him. As soon as ,he gets in his office the phone bell rings incessantly. Whenever he ventures down the carpeted corridors someone says: “Excure me, Mr Savage —Just a minute.” Mr Savage stops.

Just Plain “Mr Savage.”

Despite the fact that he is Prime Minister, he is still at heart just plain “Mr, Savage,” who. wants to do the best he can for everybody. His smile means quite a Idt." He has posed for photographers for days and days. His ordeal, however, has! just started. Ho always has a kind wdtd to say for his colleagues, and J his colleagues have for him. He seems a born leader. At the caucus, when Cabinet was elected, there was no dissent. The members were in perfect harmony.

The very fact that Mr Savage, now clothed in all his political glory, wants to lead’the simple life of an Abraham Lincoln, is evidenced by the fact that the first thing he arranged for was to take his two friends, Mr and Mrs French, with him to Wellington.

this has done much to make people realise that Mr Savage will not forget them.

Patient,

I It is safe to state that Mr Savage himself will be ready to deal ably with all matters, no matter how difficult they be.' He is patient, as also is his ' party. For twenty years Labour has fought hard to gain a victory. For the time being the battle is over. They are the victors, and the Governfnent of the last months is vanquished. Yet all the time Mr Savage is the same kindly, persevering, patient ■member he has always been. He is a man of the people, for-the people, and he is determined to do his best, no matter at what self-sacrifice, to guide New Zealand through the troubled waters into the sea of prosperity again.
