ADMITTED TO PROBATION
CASE AT PALMERSTON NORTH HUSBAND ON TRIAL. ISpecial to “Northern Advocate.”! PALMERSTON N., This Day, Manley Symes, on trial on four charges as the outcome of an incident’ on July 24 at Te Matai, Pahiatua, when a rifle was discharged and accused’s wife was wounded, was yesterday admitted to probation for two years by Mr Justice Smith, in the Supreme Court.
He was also ordered to pay the costs of the prosecution.
Evidence was given that accused resented the attentions allegedly paid to his wife by Sylvester Charles William Campbell, a former captain of the Salvation Army. Mrs Symes gave evidence that Campbell had kissed her, held her hands, brushed her hair, and taken her out alone for car rides. Campbell, however, denied that he was on more than friendly terms with Mrs Symes. Mr J. M. Gordon (for accused) said Mrs Symes was a mere girl of 20 who had been happily married for 18 months until “this black, evil, ugly shadow” came across her life.
