NARROW ESCAPE

VAN’S CAREER OVER BANK

Two young Broadwood men had a narrow escape from serious, injury when a delivery van in which they were driving rolled down a steep embankment near Broadwood on Tuesday. The driver, Mr A. A. Anderson, had drawn to the side of the road to permit a car to pass, and was endeavouring to regain the crown of the road when the van failed to respond to the steering gear, swerved over a bank, and somersaulted four or five times into a creek some 60 feet below. The driver was unharmed, beinjg thrown clear when the vehicle first turned over, but a passenger, Mr M. Horan, of the Broadwood Post Office staff, was carried to the bottom inside the van and received abrasions and a severe cut on one of his legs. He was conveyed to the hospital at Rawene suffering from these injuries and from shock. Latest advice states that he is progressing satisfactorily, but that it will be some two weeks before he will be released from hospital.
