THE FINAL

N.Z. LADIES’ GOLF MRS WALKER ONE UP. AFTER MORNING ROUND. [Special to "Northern Advocate.”! UPPER HUTT, This Day. The final of the New Zealand ladies’ golf championship over 36 koles was commenced this morning oyer the Wellington Club’s links at Heretaunga. The contestants are members of the victorious British team.

At the end of the first round, 18 holes, Mrs J. B. Walker was 1 up on Miss J. Anderson.

Miss Kay was far from disgraced when she was beaten by Mrs Walker in the semi-final for she played her best golf of the tournament, and even though she went out in 38, including a 6 at the eighth, where her opponent left her a foot putt to hole and she failed, she was 3 down.

Mrs Walker played the first nine in 35, one under the standard figures. In this part of the match Mrs Walker holed Iwo 9ft putts and two five-foot ers. The gallery waited a long time for her to miss one, but seemed as if her green play was to be flawless. At last, however, on the twelfth, after having holed a 14-footer for a “birdie” 3 at the eleventh, she made an error. Going boldly for a win in 4, Mrs Walker over-ran the hole by a yard, with a four-yard effort, and missed the return. This gave Miss Kay her only win of the contest. Mellsop Cup Final. The final round of the Mellsop Cup saw Miss Anderson retain the lead of eight strokes which she had gained in the first two rounds to win from Mrs Greeplees, another of the British players. Mrs Walker took third place, with Miss Kay, who had won the event for the past nine years, fourth. The surprise of the afternoon was the fine performance of Mrs C. N. Jacobsen (Akarana), whose card of 78 led the field, being a stroke better than the three Britishers. It will be recalled that Mrs Jacobsen, while on a visit to England last year, played in the British ladies’ charnpionsmp and caused a sensation in the first round by defeating an outstanding player in Miss Molly Gourlay. Mrs Jacobsen a few years ago was the champion of Miramar, and then was on g 4 handicap. She has not played a great deal in recent seasons, and -is now liberally handicapped on 9, As the result of her round she becomes the first winner of the Jessie Reid Memorial Bowl, and also won trophies for the best gross and best scores. Earlier in the tourney, in partnership with Mrs lan Stewart, she j won the handicap foursomes. j

The leading scores in. the Mel 1 sop Cup were:—Miss Anderson 226, Mrs Gx'eenlees 234, Mrs Walker 236, Miss Kay 240, Miss Barns Graham 248, Mrs Jacobsen 248, Mrs D. C. Collins (Wairarapa) 251, Mrs E. F. Cook (Castlecliff) 251. Miss J. Hornabrook (Masterton) 258. Mrs E. L. Barker (Rotorua) 259. Miss P. Helean (Seafield) 259. Miss E. M. Upton (Auckland) 259.

The district teams’ match was won by Manawatu, with a total of 240, six strokes better than Auckland. The latter might have won had Mrs J. Wilson not had a very poor round of 95. The Auckland scores were:—Mrs Jacobsen 78, Mrs Buttle 89, Miss Upton 84, Mrs Wilson 95,
