A FARCICAL SITUATION

N.Z. ALLIANCE ADVISES AGAINST PROHIBITION Some years ago, when a Bill was submitted to Parliament with the object of making the possession of liquor a crime (a cardinal point of the present prohibition platform) the N.Z. Alliance issued a manifesto which contained the following:— “To make the possession of liquor a crime, the effective detection _of which would require the correlative right of search in every house would be to establish an odious and inquisitorial tyranny entirely foreign to the fundamental principles of British law and to the whole spirit

of British liberty.” The above phase of prohibition tyranny had full rein in America, where a highly organised system of espionage was created and which proved one of the many factors that brought about such a strong revulsion of feeling against the Eighteenth Amendment. Conditions were created which would be absolutely unthinkable in any British community.

Every New Zealander will agree with the sentiments expressed above. It is because prohibition law is such “an odious and inquisitorial tyranny” that New Zealand will refuse to violate “fundamental principles of British law” and will vote solid for Confin dance. t 8
