OTAMATEA BEAT N. WAIROA.

FIVE POINT MARGIN. GAME IN DRIZZLING RAIN. The first inter-union senior Rugby match this season was played on Saturday between Otamatea and Northern Wairoa. Drizzling rain fell throughout the game, and the ball was hard to handle. Nevertheless, towards the end, Otamatea opened up some brilliant movements, and in the last 10 minutes put on eight points to take the match by 8 points to 3. Northern Wairoa held the play in Otamatea’s twenty-five right from the start, but sure handling and kicking by Skelton saved the situation time after time. Within 15 minutes after the start N. Wairoa had two shots at goal from infringements, but both kicks went wide, Wairoa kept up their, attack and took the ball right to the line. Sundberg cleared and the forwards took the ball down-field at their toes. Play centred in midfield, both packs working well.

From a free kick Wairoa were unlucky in not opening their account. The ball hit the posts. Immediately afterwards they threw away another try by attempting to pick up the greasy ball, with the result that at half-time there was no score.

On resuming Otamatea attacked, Neill and Homan taking the ball right to the line. Wade relieved, putting his backs in a good position for Meharry to score. Morresey’s kick went wide.—N. Wairoa 3, Otamatea 0.

Otamatea rallied and a beautiful passing rush ended just short of the line. From the ensuing ruck Wintle gathered in to score. Homan converted. —Otamatea 5, N. Wairoa t 3. Otamatea went away again and Sundberg was once more downed just short. Otamatea, however, were awarded a penalty well out and Homan kicked a beautiful goal.
