Coates has had an extremely busy time during the last three or four days in London. The last day was particularly hectic. In the morning, before 9 o’clock, he had a conference with representatives of Australia and South Africa in regard to proposals to improve the consumption of, and the market outlook for, wool. Then he went to Tooley Street, where, at the office of the New Zealand Dairy Board, he met a number of representatives of the butter trade and discussed matters of moment. His next engagement was at the Board of Trade, where he had important discussions > regarding ‘the future trade relations with certain foreign countries, especially in view of the recent customs proposals by one nation. Late in the afternoon he had a three hours’ talk with Mr Walter Elliot, Minister of Agriculture, having on the previous day had a similar engagement with Mr Baldwin at Downing Street. Then at .11 p.m, he had a final halfhour conference* with the New Zealand Meat Board representatives, and just before midnight saw a deputation of persons interested in the promotion and construction of the Napier-Gisborne railway, headed by Mr W. D. Lysnar. His departure from Waterloo Station was at 9 a.m. next day, and a large crowd, of New Zealanders and British Government representatives farewelled the Minister and Mrs Coates, and heartily cheered them as the train pulled out of the station. Mr Coates later left by the liner Bremen for America. Before his departure he said he was satisfied that everything was proceeding well.
