For converting a horse to his own use at Oromohoe, Edward Penney was convicted and fined £l. Penney said that the horse had been on his property for about two years. It was straying on ground, which, until recently, was not fenced in from the open run. The presiding Justice said he wished to impress upon Penney the necessity of endeavouring to find out the owners of straying stock before any move was made in using or selling the animals. Four Maoris, William Pene Apiata, Piriki Komene, Peter Paul, and Tiri George, were jointly charged with the thefts of a barrel of home brew and a sheep. Both the offences took place at Kerikeri. Tiri George was placed on probation for twelve months.
