Women’s Institute Branch Meetings

Fairhurn Orl Friday evening the Fairburn In- ;: stitute staged a sofcial in the hall. The first part of the evening was taken ,up ' with coihmunity singing, and was fol- ■ lowed--'by-games' and competitions. Mrs :: Luptcn, the president, was M.C. Songs ■ were sung by the Misses Christensei. ; and by Miss Audrey Dawson. A spec- ■' ial feature was a debate on the subject,.“That the girl of, today is inferior ■ to the early Victorian.” The.*afflrmative was taken by representatives of - the Institute, Mesdames Luptcn and Pfcuting. and Miss Theda Christensen. The negative side was taken by the men of "t he district, who were represented by Messrs. J. M. Dawson, A. E. Christensen and W. L. Foster. Mr O. Fisher was chairman and . Rev. A. In spite of wet ‘weather, Mrs Reddy presided over a ’fairly well-attended meeting. It was ’.'decided,' to hold a sale of work from .the Blind Institute.. The members re- ’ gret -the- departure from the district ci Mrs Levy, who has been a very active member .since the - Institute was formed. They expressed their appreciation, of her services by. sending her : h silver sandwich ‘ basket and wished •her success in her new home. The competition for the prizes donated by Mr G. Winson, resulted: Scenes, Miss ; Spick 1, Mrs Appleyard 2, Mrs Edwards and Mrs Reddy 3. Sponge ’sandwich,i Mrs.;, Appleyard 1, Miss P. Gorry 2. Miss Aileen Worthington gave a ivery interesting demonstration of the making and baking of puff pastry. Marohemo The monthly meeting of the Marohemo Institute was held in the Maro--1 hemo Hall on July 4. Theresas a fair attendance of members and visitors from Whakapirau. The meeting was opened with the song, “Comrades and Friends.”; Mrs Jenkins gave sin interesting talk on travelling through the Suez Canal to England. The demonstration on barbola, given by Mrs McKenzie, was much appreciated. The roll-call, -impromptu speeches, brought forth some very interesting .replies. Hostesses, for the day were Mrs Lambert, Mrs McKenzie and Miss Fergus. Whareom The Whareora Institute held its monthly meeting' in the hall. Afier luncheon Mrs Clarke welcomed the visitor, Mrs Rouse,, and, opened the meeting-with the reading of the aspirations..- The competitipn for a fancy cafcer resulted: Mrs McLennan 1, Mrs C-Smith ’2,” Miss M. : Halse 3. That for emhrmdered- d’oyleys was won by Mrs Tayjnor, with Mrs Poolman second, and Miss ,:M. Halse third; and the guessing • competition was won by Mrs Finlay-sbn-Smith; Hostesses: were Mesdames Clarke 1 and Rayneli The roll-call was a verbal 1 ; household hint.

Awanui The monthly meeting of the Awanui Institute was held in Evans’ Hall on July 11. Owing to. Mrs Johnson’s unavoidable absence, Mrs Harrison, the vice-president, was in the chair. The meeting opened with the Institute scng. and the roll-call was the exchange of flower plants. The secretary read various letters, including one front Mrs W. Wrathall. secretary of the Northland Federation, and it was decided to make a donation at a later date to the Federation funds. The Foresters’ Lodge is to be thanked for the offer of the use of their hall for all committee meetings and play practices. After the usual business had been transacted, the afternoon was devoted to games. There was also a treasure hunt. The members of the Institute have organised a dance, to be held in Evans’ Hall on July 25. The sum of £1 5/- was raised by the members in aid of the Women’s Division housekeeping fund. Mr Switzer made and presented the Institute with a pair of trestles for the table. The monthly competition for short pastry, and something made /rom sugar-bag, were won by Mrs Bridgeford (short pastry), and Mrs Sid Richards (sugar-bag). Two nejbr members, Mrs Kemp and Mrs C. Thompson, were welcomed. Hostesses were Mesdames A. Maria, Alan Matthews, and Ray Matthews. Parua Bay There was a moderate attendance-at the Parua Bay Institute meeting. A vote of thanks was accorded to Mrs Fulbrooke and Mrs Harnett for decorating the hall in the Institute colours. The competition for a pot of marmalade -was won by Mrs Freer, Mrs Fulbreoke being second. The roll-call was the earliest recollections of Parua Bay, which produced a surprising amount of information. Mrs Freer was hostess for the afternoon. Poroti The Poroti Institute held its meeting in the hall. There was a goodattendance of members together with several visitors from the Titoki Institute. .The roll-call,.for the month was a useful kitchen hint. The first prize in the knitted garment competition was won by Mrs Parker, with-’ Mrs Draffln second. The result of the sewing competition was; Mrs Croucher 1, Miss D. Mooney' 2. Mesdames McMullen and Draffin were in charge of the competitions. \ Mrs Adams and Miss Pepi looked after the trading table, and Mrs F. Linnell and Miss Robison were hostesses. Taifiuha The July meeting of the Taipuha Institute was held at the residence of Mrs Finlayson. , The roll-call, “A Funny Story, preferably Scotch or Irish,” brought forth several good tales and some amusement. The competition for six pieces of shortbread was won by Mrs Finlayson. Mrs McCarfoll was second and Mrs McAdam third. Some delphinium seeds from England were distributed among those present. Mrs Statham gave a demonstration of papier mache work. This proved so simple and interesting that it was decided to hold a competition for making a papier mache bowl at some future date. One or two musical items were enjoyed and the meeting closed with afternoon tea. Titoki At the July meeting of the Titoki Institute, Mrs Carruth was chosen as delegate to the Dominion Conference. Final arrangements were made for the charity entertainment which is to be held on August 7. Bright ballets and choruses will be a feature of the night’s programme. The competition for scones resulted: Miss Frances Griffin first and second, and Mrs Griffin third. The needlework, 'knitting and toys were judged on points. The ‘results were: Needlework, Mrs Thompson first, Miss P. Fraser 2. Knitting: Miss P. Fraser first, Miss Jack 2, Mrs R. Fraser 3. Toys; Mrs Platt. - Mesdames Blake and Hunter acted as judges in all sections. Mrs Lyddiard was the hostess. Tutekehua The monthly meeting of the Tutcke-hua-Omahuta Institute was held in Mrs J. Creighton’s residence on July 10. There was a large gathering. The rcll-call was ‘‘My greatest kitchen mishap.” Out of a large array of arts and crafts, Mrs F. Holland’s article was judged first and Miss P. Cornford’s second. Mrs J. E. Tulloch read an interesting article. ‘‘The Leaky Bucket. It was decided to send Mrs J. Creighton as a delegate to the conference in Auckland on July 24,

Maunu The seventh birthday of the Maunu Institute was celebrated at Mrs H. Snell’s residence. The president, Mrs Dcrehill, presided over a good attendance. Visitors were present .from the Institutes of the group. Mrs Byrne, of Whangarei, gave an interesting demonstration of pruning. Community singing followed. The birthday cake, made by Mrs J. I. W'jlscn. and iced by Mrs D. Wilson. was. cut by Mrs Carter. Two recitations were given by Mrs Byrne. The two competitions were won by Mrs Dawson, Maungatapere. and Mrs McCarroll. The competition for a jar of marmalade resulted as follows: —Mrs D. Wilson 1, Mrs A. Mathews 2, Mrs H. Haxvkin 3. Russell The first birthday of the Russell Institute was held on July 16, in Brodker’s Hall, there being a large gathering of members and friends.' Songs were given by Mesdames Cook and Adamson, monologues by Miss Simpson, and pianoforte solos by Mrs Cates. A menu competition was wen by Mrs Englehardt, whilst Mrs Adamson’s entry of a string-bag, carried off the honours for best sugar-bag article. Before cutting the cake, Mrs J. C. Martin referred to the past year’s working and members’ ideas and intentions for the future
