GOVERNOR-GENERAL’S PROMISE. MEMORIAL UNVEILED. [Per Press Association.—Copyrightl NAPIER, This Day. “I promise that while in New Zealand I will do my utmost to be a true friend to the Maori people, and I will encourage in every way possible the development of schemes bringing prosperity to them,” said the GovernorGeneral, Viscount Galway, yesterday afternoon, at Omahu Pa, where he presided at the unveiling of a memorial to -the late Taranaki Te Ua. There were present at the ceremony .groups of Maoris numbering about 2000 from the Taranaki, Wairarapa, East Coast, Bay of Plenty, Wanganui, King Country and Urewera districts. His Excellency was also accorded today a civic reception in Napier, where he laid the foundation stone of a new art gallery and addressed the school children. Tomorrow he will receive a civic welcome at Hastings in the morning and proceed south immediately afterwards.
