AFTER HORSE WON
OWNER’S FATAL SEIZURE,* DEATH OF MR F. W.’ STONEX. Just after Crooning, of which he was owner, had won the Awakino Hack Handicap, at the Dargaville Races on Saturday, Mr F. W. Stones, a prominent owner, and one of the biggest property owners in the Northern Wairoa, was attacked by a heart seizure. He was rushed to hospital in the St. John Ambulance, but died without rallying. • Mr Stonex was a well-known Auckland business man of the firm' of Messrs Stonex Bros., and resided at 44, Grange Road, Mt. Eden, He saw Crooning win the Awakino Hack Handicap and received numerous congratulations on the success of his horse, after which he complained of feeling unwell. An ambulance was immediately called to the scens and he was taken to the Northern Wairoa Hospital. He died shortly after reaching the institution. > Mr Stonex’s horses were withdrawn from all later events at the meeting. • Mr Stonex;, had been, in business in Auckland for many years, and when the Auckland Metropolitan Milk Council was set up early last year he was appointed one of the foundation mem-, bers. He was prominent in horse-racing circles in Auckland for many years, and was the owner of Crooning, Grand Tonic, Hushing, 4 Sleepy Sol and . other good horses. In. the days when pony faces figured on the programmes of the racing clubs in . Auckland, his colours were carried to victory. on occasions by .a pony named Solitary. From this mare ;Mr Stonex bred several horses which he subsequently raced. The keen .interest which he consistently jshowed in racing was evidenced by his regular attendance at the training track all the, year round,, '
