CAR IN FLAMES
DRIVER’S NARROW ESCAPE. RESCUED BY COMPANION. SYDNEY, January 15. When a car in which six persons were riding on the Dubbo-Narromine road yesterday, left the road, somersaulted, and burst into flames, the occupants had a remarkable escape. The driver had to be pulled out of the blazing car. Thomas Trounce, farmer, was driving a party of Wellington bowlers, including William Willocks, David Austin, Len McConnell, arid the two Misses Trounce, to Narromine. About four miles from Narromine the car struck a rough section of the road, ran off the formation, and overturned. All the occupants except Trounce were thrown clear. Although McConnell was suffering from lacerations to the head, he dashed to the Dialing car and rescued Trounce, who was lying unconscious beside it. The car was quickly destroyed. Trounce suffered lacerations and concussion, and probably internal injuries. Austin and Willocks received severe lacerations and abrasions, and the Misses Trounce suffered shock. McConnell had 16 stitches inserted in head wounds. The Dubbo Ambulance took the injured to Narromine, and conveyed Trounce to the district hospital. BcConnell said that if the roof of the car had not collapsed when the vehicle somersaulted, the occupants could not have escaped incineration.
