TWENTY-FIRST BIRTHDAY
MARUA CELEBRATION. On Friday evening, Mr and Mrs Low were host and hostess at a party held in the hall to celebrate the twenty-first birthday of their younger daughter, Nora. A large number of guests attended.
Mrs Low received her guests wearing a frock of black marocain relieved with white. Miss N. Low wore a frock of white marocain. Excellent orchestral music was supplied, extras being played by Messrs Brown and W. Woodgate. Mr Billington was M.C. After supper, the toast of the guest of honour was proposed by Mr Billington, Mr Turner responding. The host and hostess were then honoured, the toast being proposed by Mr Swinbourn and replied to by Mr Billington. The cake, which had been made by Mrs McPhee and decorated in pink and white by Mrs Billington, was cut and handed round to the guests. On the stage was a table well-laden with presents, giving an indication of the high esteem in which the guest of honour is held. Personal.
Mrs McLennan paid a short visit to her sister, Mrs Low.
Miss L. Low was at home for the week-end. Mr and Mrs Richardson also journeyed from Papakura and stayed for a few days. Mrs Billington and family are holidaying at Whananaki. Tennis. Last week the Helena Bay B team played a challenge match against the Marua B team. The latter retained the cup. The following are the results, Helena Bay names being mentioned first:—
Ladies’ singles.—Mrs Hooper lost to Mrs Wood. I—6;1 —6; Mrs Bradney lost to Miss P. Hutching, 5 —6; Miss Connel beat Mrs Ferguson, G—4; Mrs Derrick beat Mrs Fyfe, 6—5. Men’s singles.—Hooper beat R. Cook, 6—5; Hay lost to J. Mcßreen, 3 —6; Derrick lost to A. Ferguson, 4 —6; Booth lost to C .Fyfe, o—6.0 —6. Combined doubles. —Mrs Hooper and Hooper beat Mrs Wood and R. Cook, 6 —o; Mrs Bradney and Hay beat Miss P. Hutching and J. Mcßreen, 6—5; Miss Connel and Derrick beat Mrs Ferguson and Ferguson 6 —5; Mrs Derrick and Booth lost to Mrs Fyfe and Fyfe, 3—6.
Ladies’ doubles.—Mrs Hooper and Mrs Bradney lost to Mrs Wood and Miss Hutching. 4—6; Miss Connel and Mrs Derrick beat Mrs Ferguson and Mrs Fyfe, 6—2. Marua won 9 sets and 80 games; and Helena Bay 7 sets and 70 games.
