LOAN PROPOSALS
NEW VICTORIA BRIDGE. ESTIMATED COST £8750. : SPECIFICATIONS FINALISED. The Whangarei Borough Council, at its meeting, proposes to consider a motion to apply to the Local Gov--1 element Loans Board for its sanction of the borrowing''of £8750 for the purpose of rebuilding Victoria Bridge, near the Town Wharf. The consulting engineer, Mr R. P. Wqfley, of Auckland, estimates that the; new bridge will cost £7IOO, and approaches £ 780. To this has to be
added engineering supervision and contingencies £7BB, and cost of raising* the loan, £ 82. The rate required to be struck as security for the loan is 2-Md in the £ of*' the rateable value on the basis of the unimproved value of all rateable property in the borough. The estimate makes provision for a bridge .having a clearance of 9ft Gin above high' water level, with a width of 22ft between kerbs. Completed plans, and specification should be ready in about a fortnight. 'Mr Worley originally suggested a structure with a clearance of 7ft Gin and a width of 24ft. After hearing a deputation from ’the Whangarei Cruising Club, which claimed that boat owners above the bridge would be greatly inconvenienced unless a greater clearance was provided for, the council adopted 9ft Gin as the height and lessened the proposed width by two feet. The authority of the Loans Board is also to be sought for the erection of a new library building, and it is expected that the joint architects, Messrs H. L. Massey (Auckland) and A. P. Morgan (Whangarei), will have the estimates -ready within a week.
